Each and every day, we use our wallets to make the world a better place by purchasing Fair Trade products that raise wages for international workers. But, closer to home, are we really putting our money where our mouths are?
Close to half of all New York City restaurant workers (44%) live below the poverty level and 13% still earn less than minimum wage.
The root causes of these economic conditions are numerous, but the bottom line is simple: until we can make better, more informed choices about where to eat, establishments that pay or aspire to pay their employees a living wage go unrecognized while the industry, as a whole, continues to lack any incentive to change.
Wage to Live (WTL) was created to intervene in this dynamic. WTL is a new organization that seeks out and certifies restaurants that provide or have committed to providing their employees a living wage. At the same time, we work hard to spread the word about the importance of a living wage.
By choosing Wage to Live Certified restaurants, you are rewarding socially-responsible businesses, demonstrating your support for higher wages, and bringing about change, one meal at a time.
Help stick a fork in poverty and make hard work pay. Join our mailing list and look for updates about our certification process and our Fall 2007 launch!
